"One of sour,
Two of sweet,
Three of strong,
Four of weak"
(freshly squeezed lime juice, strained)
(granulated sugar)
(best quality rum < Bacardi >)
(water)
The above means "one parts, two parts," etc.
and this recipe may be made in any quantity
desired, keeping the proportions the same.
Tonight I used 1/4 cup as the unit.
First I mixed 1/2 C. sugar ( 2 of sweet ) with
1/2 C. water, brought it to a boil, stirring
constantly, then added 1/2 C. very cold water,
stirred and set aside to chill.
Then I added 1/4 C. fresh chilled lime juice and 3/4 cup rum,
and stirred , then set aside to turn very cold.
Have the glasses cold, set a pitcher into cracked
ice, pour the drink into the pitcher
and serve. Put no ice in the drink.
This served five light drinkers with all
they wanted + some left over.
This is the original recipe, given me by
Mister Collester, who had got it at the Daiquiri mine.

This recipe card is in Margaret Todd Ford’s ( Ruth’s mother ) handwriting. Ruth was born in Cuba, which is where Daiquiri is located. I have no idea who Mister Collester was; alas it is too late to ask Ruth. Perhaps he was an engineer and associate of Ralph Ford. I wonder who the 5 light drinkers were, perhaps Margaret, Ruth, Bart, and neighbors. If Ruth and Bart were there, then certainly Roger, David and I were, too. It is pleasant to contemplate that perhaps cold March evening in Elkhart, when chilling the ingredients posed no problem. A simpler time of youthful innocence…
